  • Most harvesting is conducted on single tree selection; that is selection of individual mature trees for harvest.
  • Over a million trees are planted in Indiana each year. However. most hardwood forests are regenerated naturally from their seeds and sprouts.

How Big is Indiana Forestry?

  • The Indiana forest products industry is the fifth largest manufacturing industry in the state.
  • Indiana has 4.4 million acres of forest land; 87% of that land is held by private owners.
  • Nationally, Indiana ranks third in hardwood lumber production adding over 54 billion dollars to the Indiana economy.
  • The forest products industry employs over 50,000 Hoosiers statewide. As small family-owned businesses, wood products companies average less than 50 employees and play an important role in rural communities.

  • One third of the U.S. is covered with trees . . . 730 million acres.
  • Each day, the forestry community plants over 6 million seedlings to ensure the continuation of this important natural resource.
  • Lumber and wood products companies employ 1.2 million people who plant, grow, harvest and produce wood and paper products.
  • Lumber and wood products firms are the most energy efficient of all industries, using wood waste to furnish 75% of their energy needs.
  • Roughly one third of our nation's forests, over 245 million acres, are set aside in national parks and wilderness areas never to be touched by logging.
